Pues eso, aquí podemos ver a un pastelero bigotón, algo pasado de moda y con cara de pocos amigos. La tinta está hecha en el "mundo real" con unos rotus de esos caligráficos, que son la leche y el color en PS.

Pobre vejete, cómo se compadece... Parece también un poco tristón. La verdad es que con esa carota tan redonda lo que mejor le va es una sonrisa de oreja a oreja, no? Como siempre, tinta en Flash y color en PS.

Very influenced by two masters, Jordi Bernet and Alex Toth.

Una nueva ilustración un tanto densa, roja, oscura y compacta. Un cementerio con un coro infernal de fantasmas. Sin luna ni nubes. Gracias a dos de los grandes, Bernet y Alex Toth.

MOGAMBO

New sketches from a film. Cos you want it...you get it!
After a long time, this section comes back with
MOGAMBO (1953), a fantanstic jungle-film with an awesome casting (Clark Gable, Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly!!) and directed by John Huston.
Some scenes was filmed on Safari in Africa. And there's gorillas in that film...great
Tarzan's Clayton Character has some kind of deja-vu with Gable's role.

MOGAMBO (1953)
Una película clásica de aventuras en la jungla, con unos protagonistas que quitan la respiración, Clark Gable, Ava Gardner, y Grace kelly. Además dirige John Houston.
Tiene algunas escenas rodadas de Safari en África (eran otros tiempos y se podían permitir todo lo que se les ocurriera) y encima salen gorilas!!¿Qué más se puede pedir?
La verdad, es que al ver A Clayton en la peli Disney de Tarzán...siente uno un ligero deja-vu al recordar el personaje de Gable...

Pero...dónde está el tatuaje?? Vale... es el brazo un minuto antes de hacerse el tatuaje. Con ese pedazo de cacho de brazo deben caber por lo menos 2 millones de dibujos dentro, hala, a imaginar!

MOSCA (Del lat. musca).

Insecto díptero, muy común y molesto, de unos seis milímetros de largo, de cuerpo negro, cabeza elíptica, más ancha que larga, ojos salientes, alas transparentes cruzadas de nervios, patas largas con uñas y ventosas, y boca en forma de trompa, con la cual chupa las sustancias de que se alimenta.
2. f. Pelo que nace al hombre entre el labio inferior y el comienzo de la barba, y que algunos dejan crecer aun no llevando perilla.
Desde luego la segunda definición de la Real Academia Española no tiene desperdicio....

Esta semana toca ejercicio de estilo, y tiramos por lo clásico, homenajeando a los clásicos ultrasimplistas de la UPA. Os recomiendo el interesantísimo Cartoon Modern un blog sobre un nuevo libro de animación y diseño en los 50, con una pinta increíble...que saldrá en junio del 2006. Ya podéis reservarlo en Amazon.

The Drawn! Project #1 - Memory

This is one of my submissions for this amazing project. The fantastic people of DRAWN!
wants to create a print publication and use the proceeds to benefit a given charity. Each artist submitting work for the first project will be basing their art around the theme MEMORY. The Alzheimer's Association has been chosen as the first charity to help out.

Otro dibu sencillito, la verdad es que parece la portada de un disco. Si existiera (o existiese) un grupo llamado "song"...pues ya saben que tienen la portada para su primer disco hecha..
Me imagino a un hombre corriendo por encima de las teclas del piano, tocando la melodía en su carrera por encima de las notas.

This is a loose exercise with a very small warm palette. The idea of the poster of Tricicle's play "Sit" was on my mind.

Otro ejercicio muy suelto con una paleta de colores cálidos muy limitada. Me acordé de que en el cartel de la obra "Sit" de los Tricicle salía una silla enorme y de ahí me vino la idea.

A classic tale: a man, a sword and a stone......Another try in photoshop (this time the line is made in the real world with traditional ink and paper) I've found the inspiration for this illo, after looking some classic Leyendecker paintings... (don't ask me why....)

La vieja historia de siempre... un hombre, una piedra y una espada... El color está hecho con photoshop, pero esta vez el dibujo sí que está hecho en el mundo real con papel, lápiz y tinta de toda la vida. No me preguntéis porqué, pero me vino la inspiración mirando unas pinturas de Leyendecker...

What if a million cats appear in your window? What a weird nightmare.... It's a little color concept to catch the idea and some mood. It's done completely in photoshop. No pencil nor paper this time, only Miss wacom.

¿Te imaginas un millón de gatos apostados en tu ventana? Una pesadilla extraña, solo de pensar en ello me da hasta repelús, todos los gatos ahí parados, mirando... bufff.
Es una prueba a color para captar un poco la idea. Está hecho entero en photoshop (casi sin boceto). Ni papel ni lapiz esta vez, (una pena) solo mi gran amiga, la srta.Wacom.

FALSTAFF (Chimes at midnight)

Another study about composition in classic movies. This time: Falstaff, 1965 (a.k.a "Chimes At Midnight") A strange movie by Orson Welles, filmed completely in Spain. The plot is a compilation of extracts from Shakespeare's 'Henry IV' 'Richard II' and other plays.
In this movie you can see one of the most emblematic sequences of Orson's career, the awesome battle in the middle of the film.
These are sketches of three fantastic eye-worm shots. I am charmed with the second one.


Otro estudio sobre composición sacado de las pelis clásicas. Esta vez "Campanadas a medianoche" de Orson Welles. Es una peli bastante rara, que además está filmada por completo en España, una tierra que nuestro querido Orson adoraba. La peli es de 1965 y el guión es un refrito de varias obras de Shakespeare (Ricardo II, Enrique IV y Las alegres comadres de Windsor).
La peli tiene una batalla impresionante además de miles de planos que son una lección por sí mismos. He subido bocetos de estos tres contrapicados, muy típicos de Orson, pero la verdad es que no dejan de alucinarme.
El segundo es una verdadera joya, profundidad de campo infinita... Y esos colgados bufff!

This week, the topic is " E for..."
A fantastic topic for me. I want to draw Excalibur, the sword in the stone and here it is.
This is a thumbnail in a classic "orsonwellesque" worm-eye-shot style.

Esta semana el tema es "Empieza por E.." Así que como tenía ganas de dibujar algo de Excalibur, me dibujo la espada en la piedra. Como estoy metido (por puro placer) en el estudio de de las pelis del amigo Orson, le hago aquí un homenaje con esta miniatura, inspirada en sus clásicos planos ultra-contrapicados-casi-bajo-tierra...

Prêt-à-porter fashion

A few ultra-thin models. The ones that the clothes seem to float and to draw them is sooo boring ... No curves, no volume, no forms ... they throw fewer shades than a noodle. Roundness rules!

Unas cuantas modelos ultra-flacas, de esas en las que la ropa parece flotar y que son tan aburridas de dibujar. Curvas cero, volúmen cero, formas cero... arrojan menos sombras que un fideo. Vivan las curvas! Por lo menos la ropa está curiosa.

Por petición popular, más caretos sacados de aquí y allá en los periódicos. Parece que no, pero al final se aprende algo...
Con el nuevo año a ver si recupero el tema de subir más cosas de este estilo.

This week, the topic is "sea".
I like this way of drawing, but sometimes I'd prefer more than only one word. I think the one-word formula makes me draw very simple and concise illos. But in this case....the SEA deserves it.

La verdad es que a veces es un poco rollo que el tema sea siempre "sólo-una-palabra"... Me dejo llevar y casi siempre me limito a hacer cosas muy sencillitas y ajustadas al tema, sin desvariar demasiado.
Aunque en este caso, con el MAR de fondo, parece que está más que justificado.

El azul, que es un color y un estado de ánimo (in ínglish, porque aquí no sé yo...) podría ser también un sabor. Bueno hay un zumo de Rives (Blue Tropic, creo) que tiene un sabor raro, azul dulzón como a pitufo.

Celebrity Death

Para el concurso de esta semana el tema era "Celebrity Death" (que no alcanzo muy bien a traducir, la verdad) Así que pensando en una carrera de fórmula uno algo trágica...solo me imagino a un ganador (la muerte.) Iba a dibujar a los demás corredores por ahí hechos polvo, pero al final no ha dado tiempo, así que la muerte se lleva los flashes, el premio, el champán y a las chicas de la foto.

Sublime

I made this illo for an exhibition contest in UK. The theme was "Sublime", "inspired by recent imagery of the forces of nature and scenes of war, the organization wanted images of contemporary visions of the sublime."
Unfortunately the image was not chosen.
As you can see, it's very influenced by the great French artist Sempé.

Una ilustración para un concurso inglés (de la asociación de ilustradores de uk). Aprovechando el Tsunami, el Katrina y las guerras actuales, porponían como tema "lo sublime".
Al final no han seleccionado el dibujo.
Se ve claramente que está muy "inspirado" en el gran Sempé. (El jueves ha sacado algunos libros suyos y han reeditado ahora, Alfaguara creo, el pequeño nicolás.)

Something strange... not so blue, isn't it? Try to scream "blue" if you're a red one.
I want to do something simple but very effective. Only red and white, even no ink.
It's the first illo I've done completely in a digital way (no pencil sketch this time).

BATMAN rough

A new quick-exercise. Sketch (very elaborate) with paper and pencil, all the color is done in photoshop.
I also use a little pig-headed-star wars toy (thanks to burger king) to get all the sahdows on the face. The illo was a little bigger, but I think this close-up is more powerful than the complete figure.

crack! uh, my back is complaining! Another watercolor/digital experiment.

One for the Zombie...

This is my first Attempt using some new watercolor brushes in Photoshop.
It's just a classic Zombie panel, with open graves, fog and some kind of cemetery background.

I've tried to get some "atmosfear" with a limited (and warm) color palette,
It's only a quick sketch... In a future: more and better!
